Cross‐depth connectivity shows that deep kelps may act as refugia by reseeding climate‐vulnerable shallow beds

چکیده
Refugia are habitats where species can survive or retreat to during environmental disturbances. One key assumption of that constitute refugia is they may assist in the persistence impacted populations through provision reproductive propagules. This “reseeding” hypothesis assumes demographic connectivity exists between and habitats. We tested this for kelp Ecklonia radiata, a temperate marine foundation dominant coast Australia. Our study site was Western Australia, system deep considered act as their shallow counterparts, yet, which estimations population have overlooked propagule dispersal across depth. Here, we simulated ocean circulation conditions three-dimensional oceanographic model propagules by incorporating physical properties zoospores within model. The trajectories were tracked analyzed identify probability settlement domain study. Measurements fecundity depth obtained region, used estimate zoospore densities. show E. radiata capacity supply reefs. results released at deeper beds (40 m depth) transported reefs (<20 densities sufficient drive fertilization. Analysis particle exchange among depths also indicates mid-depth (~25 important “stepping stones” cross-depth connectivity, enhancing shallowest deepest locations, especially when different separated tens kilometers. after an disturbance, persistent kelps sourcing reseeding reefs, provided adequate recruitment growth. demonstrates exchange, habitat-building living areas undamaged biophysical disturbances reseed aid recovery if regrowth, ensure persistence.

Fertile fathoms: Deep reproductive refugia for threatened shallow corals
The persistence of natural metapopulations may depend on subpopulations that exist at the edges of species ranges, removed from anthropogenic stress. Mesophotic coral ecosystems (30-150 m) are buffered from disturbance by depth and distance, and are potentially massive reservoirs of coral diversity and fecundity; yet we know little about the reproductive capabilities of their constituent specie...

Background & Aim:Nowadays, the use of chemical preservatives has been limited due to the controversial adverse effects. In this study, we evaluated the preservative potency of product with active herbal ingredients (Barij Baby cream) in contrast with the same products with two different chemical preservatives including methylparaben plus propylparaben and potassium sorbate plus...

متن کاملRefugia and connectivity sustain amphibian metapopulations afflicted by disease.
Metapopulation persistence in fragmented landscapes depends on habitat patches that can support resilient local populations and sufficient connectivity between patches. Yet epidemiological theory for metapopulations has largely overlooked the capacity of particular patches to act as refuges from disease, and has suggested that connectivity can undermine persistence. Here, we show that relativel...
متن کاملDeep reefs are not universal refuges: Reseeding potential varies among coral species
Deep coral reefs (that is, mesophotic coral ecosystems) can act as refuges against major disturbances affecting shallow reefs. It has been proposed that, through the provision of coral propagules, such deep refuges may aid in shallow reef recovery; however, this "reseeding" hypothesis remains largely untested. We conducted a genome-wide assessment of two scleractinian coral species with contras...
